Winter is Coming: 6 Ways to Prevent Property Damage and Keep Your Home Safe This Season
11/5/2024 (Permalink)
November ushers in colder temperatures, and with that comes an increased risk of damage from winter weather. From frozen pipes to ice dams, homeowners and businesses need to take proactive steps to avoid costly repairs and property loss. SERVPRO of Marshfield/Rockland is here to help you stay ahead of winter’s worst, with tips on preparing your home or business for the season.
1. Protect Your Pipes from Freezing Frozen pipes are a major concern in colder months. When water freezes inside the pipes, it expands, which can lead to burst pipes and extensive water damage. To prevent this:
- Insulate pipes in unheated areas, such as attics, basements, and garages.
- Let faucets drip during extreme cold snaps.
- Open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around pipes, especially those under sinks.
2. Prevent Ice Dams on Your Roof Ice dams can cause serious water damage to both the interior and exterior of your home. The combination of snow and ice buildup at the roof’s edge can block melting water from draining off properly, causing it to back up under shingles. To avoid ice dams:
- Ensure attic insulation and ventilation are adequate.
- Clean gutters before snow and ice accumulate.
- Consider installing heated cables along the roofline to prevent ice buildup.
3. Inspect Your Heating System A malfunctioning heating system can lead to uncomfortable—and even unsafe—conditions inside your home. Check your furnace or heating system before temperatures drop to avoid a breakdown. If you’re unsure about the condition of your system, consider hiring a professional to inspect and clean it.
4. Maintain Your Chimney and Fireplace If you plan on using your fireplace this winter, make sure it’s safe. Creosote buildup and blockages can lead to dangerous chimney fires. Have your chimney cleaned and inspected by a professional before you light your first fire.
5. Prepare for Storms and Power Outages November often brings the first major snowstorms and ice storms of the season. Prepare your home by:
- Stocking up on essentials like water, non-perishable food, and medications.
- Checking your emergency kit, including flashlights, batteries, and blankets.
- Making sure your generator is in good working condition (if you have one).
6. Clean Your Roof and Gutters Leaves and debris can clog gutters, preventing proper drainage and increasing the risk of water damage. Clean gutters regularly and inspect your roof for missing or damaged shingles before the heavy snow falls.
By taking these simple steps now, you can help prevent significant damage to your property during the colder months. However, if the worst happens—whether it's a burst pipe, water damage from ice dams, or a fireplace mishap—SERVPRO of Marshfield/Rockland is here to help restore your home or business to its preloss condition. Contact us for expert cleanup, water damage restoration, and winter weather-related services.
Ice Dams
1/4/2023 (Permalink)
Winter in New England can cause a number of issues on homes. Ice dams can cause extensive water damage to your home.
Ice Dams form along the eaves of a roof preventing the snow from adequately draining and creating a backup. When Water is trapped it seeks a way to escape. The escape route often being an opening in your home. The water seeps into your home, getting into the insulation and eventually damaging walls and ceilings. The results can be extensive damage to your home.
How To Prevent Ice Dams:
- Seal air leaks and ducts
- Add more insulation
- Ensure attics are properly ventilated

Protect Your Home From Heavy Rain
6/2/2022 (Permalink)
Sometimes rain can be a pain.
While rain water in and of itself doesn’t pose a huge threat, rainstorms that are heavy and occur over several days can expose your home to long-term damage. Here are a few steps you can take to reduce water damage risks:
Have A Healthy Roof
The best protection for your home in stormy weather conditions is your roof – think of it as your first line of defense. Make sure your roof is in good condition by looking for things like loose shingles, surface divots, soft spots, and cracks. Roofs that exhibit any of these can cause leaks, leading to potentially serious internal damage on your walls on ceiling. If you don’t see any problems with your roof but are still wondering if it’s up to standards, it never hurts to call a professional to come out and give it an inspection.
Inspect Your Gutters
Having well running gutters in place can be critical when experiencing heavy rainfall. Gutters help keep water off your home’s walls, so it’s important to keep them clean and clear of debris.
Direct Water Away from Your Home
This may seem like an obvious one, but that doesn’t make it any less important. Directing rainwater runoff away from the foundation of your home prevents the formation of puddles around it. As water seeps into the ground, it can crack your foundation, creating an opening for more water to get in and attract mold and mildew. Downspouts that direct water five to ten feet away from your house play a big role in preventing that kind of damage.
Following these steps will help you keep your home safe and protected from water damage during the rainy season. As always, if you do experience any type of water or storm damage, give SERVPRO of Marshfield/Rockland a call at 781-834-7707 and our response team will be there to fix it in no time.

Do you have the right insurance in case of Storm Damage?
6/3/2021 (Permalink)
Bad weather can spring up without much of a warning. Most of the time when a flash flood or bad snowstorm is threatening your area, you barely have enough time to find shelter. As a homeowner, it is important that you think about these moments before they occur.
Do you have the correct insurance policy? Is your home going to be covered in the event of a disaster? Is the amount of coverage going to be enough to restore your home? Thinking about these questions before the storm damage occurs can make your life after the storm much easier.
Before you do anything else, stop and make sure your home is covered for the following:
- Water and Windstorm Damage
- Debris or Tree Removal
- Sewer Backup Due to Flooding
- Sump Pump Failures Due to Flooding
- Additional Living Expenses In Case A Storm Forces You Out of Your Home

It can be difficult for families to know how to move on from this misfortune. The best thing you can do for your family and your home is to begin storm damage recovery immediately.

Cleaning Floodwater In Your Basement
6/1/2021 (Permalink)
Natural flooding can introduce debris, sediment, and other solids to the basement of your home. While water in this situation can spread quickly throughout this level of the property, the proper mitigation and cleaning techniques can help to regain control of the disaster and reduce preventable loss. Between extraction, drying, muck out services, and cleaning, we can make flood losses “Like it never even happened.”
Before restoring elements of flood damage to Bridgewater homes like debris and potential contaminants, our SERVPRO professionals must focus on removing standing water. With natural flooding scenarios, unfinished basements can allow for substantial penetration. Following these disasters, homes in the direct path of migrating floodwater can battle several feet of standing water. Our technicians have premier equipment to help, including a wide array of extraction tools.
In situations where debris is known to exist, and a higher volume of water is present, we can utilize our extractor trucks. When hooked up directly through the truck-mount pump, we can discharge floodwater into sanitary sewer systems or culverts. With continual discharge, these powerful extractors can work at levels of 300 psi to extract thousands of gallons of standing water until debris removal and cleaning could be practical to begin.
Muck out and cleaning work together with controlled demolition. In many situations, portions of exposed wood framework joists beneath the floor must get cleaned with biocides and disinfectants. This sterilization can remove the potential for widespread biothreats and the development of mold colonies. We can also clean and dry concrete floors by first shoveling out mud and debris and working with pressure washers and cleaning agents to restore the floor to its original condition.
After a flooding incident, any homeowner can contend with substantial debris, mud, and other solids. Cleaning up after this loss can require a wide array of proven techniques, cutting-edge equipment, and potent products. Our SERVPRO of Marshfield/Rockland team can help with a fast response to begin extraction and debris removal as promptly as possible. Give our team a call anytime at 781-834-7707.
Cleaning and Disinfection Is Crucial After A Flood
6/1/2021 (Permalink)
Cleaning and Disinfection After Flood Loss in Your Home
Disasters can take a severe toll on your home. Despite your ability to keep a clean home, the level of care and restoration that a property needs after natural flooding often exceeds the limitations and knowledge of traditional upkeep and maintenance for your property. Our cleaning technicians have accreditations through the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), making them knowledgeable assets in returning your flooded property to preloss condition.
After natural flooding, there are many obstacles to overcome with the flood cleanup in your home. Silt, mud, and contaminants all play an active role in the hurdles our SERVPRO professionals must address to return your property to its original condition. Cleaning and disinfection might be among the final stages beyond controlled demolition, extraction, and drying, but they are vital to keeping your family safe.
Beyond the mud and debris in your home after flooding, bacteria and other contaminants could also be present in the intruding water that adds a hazardous situation to leave your family exposed to for prolonged periods. Our SERVPRO team can arrive quickly, despite when the disaster occurs, so that your home does not wait a moment longer than necessary for protection and early mitigation steps. This process most often begins with the assessment of which construction materials like drywall requires removal by our contracting unit.
We have a powerful line of potent cleaning products developed to stay in compliance with OSHA regulations while not limiting the potential strength and effectiveness of our cleaning efforts. We have virucides and sporicides that can get sprayed directly on structural elements, framework, joists, and other supports to prevent the spread of bacteria or the growth of microbial threats in these areas.
After a flood, you might not always think of prioritizing cleaning and revitalization. Because of our experience and extensive training through the IICRC, we can assess the severity of hazards and bio-threats, helping to regain control of the widespread disaster and get you back to normal life fast. No matter how severe flood losses can be, our SERVPRO of Marshfield/Rockland team can make it “Like it never even happened.” Give us a call at 781-834-7707.

Will Homeowner’s Insurance Cover Winter Storm Damage?
1/25/2021 (Permalink)
All policies vary so please read the specific coverages, terms, provisions, exclusions, and conditions of your policy itself. However, here are some typical coverages of homeowner’s insurance relating to winter storm damage:
Ice Dam Insurance Coverage
Very few insurance policies cover ice dam or snow removal from your roof or anywhere else on your property for that matter. However, interior or exterior damage caused by an ice dam on your roof is typically covered. As with any insurance claim, call the claims department immediately and take photos of the damage.
Frozen Pipes Insurance Coverage
Not all companies pay to have frozen pipes thawed by professionals, though some will. Most policies cover pipe replacement and water damage. The coverage may not apply if you turned the furnace off for the winter without winterizing the house and its contents.
Interruption of Services
If you lose power during a storm, an all-risk homeowner’s policy usually pays for spoiled food, repairs to damage caused by loss of power, and appliances damaged by the outage. Many policies also will pay for shelter when you lose power for extended periods during the winter. If you lose heat and fail to take steps to prevent pipes from freezing, your policy may not cover the resulting damage.

Mother Nature and Freak Accidents Part 1

Storm damage often hits us days later when the pipes burst.
Mother nature and freak accidents are two things that are out of our control, nonetheless both can wreak havoc on our floors and the carpet under our feet. Speed and efficiency are the only option to save anything you’re standing on.
Carpets and rugs that have possibly been contaminated by sewage or have been underwater for more than 24 hours is NOT salvageable. Disposal of area rugs and carpets properly can be a large undertaking. Carpet pad that has been saturated most often cannot be dried quickly enough to avoid the growth of harmful bacteria and mold, it should be removed and replaced as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage to the floor and sub-floor.
Taking care of flooding and moisture in your carpets and floors is a daunting task and is needs to happen swiftly. Call SERVPRO of Marshfield/Rockland as soon as possible to prevent costly and permanent damage.

Doors and Hurricane Winds
3/2/2017 (Permalink)
Flood gates opened and in comes the storm and mud.
You’ve walked through it a thousand times, half the time you don’t even look up as you toss your keys on the table and sort through the mail.
The front door, or any door for that matter, is considered vulnerable to damage in hurricane strength winds. We’re no strangers to strong winds and damage in Massachusetts, and hurricane strength winds happen around here ~ any time of year.
Keep your home and family safe from damage and injury by taking care of your property before the storm hits. A tricycle or even a small rock seem much bigger when they are being propelled by winds in excess of 155 mph at your sliding glass doors! Be sure your screen doors are closed and secure, a loose screen door will at the very least slap and bang against the house causing damage or worse damage your neighbors house if it goes flying. Don’t be that neighbor. Ensure your comfort and safety by preparing for the unknown and taking care of your home the best you can, now ~ while the winds are still calm.
We can scale our resources to handle any size storm or disaster. We can access resources from a network of 1,700 Franchises across the country and elite Disaster Recovery Teams strategically located throughout the country.

Have you greased it and replaced the old batteries so it opens and closes properly? The large surface area and flimsy nature of garage doors are cause for serious concern when hurricane winds are predicted.
One inch of water from a broken or gaping door can cause thousand of dollars in flood damage in less than an hour. The security of your home can be compromised by a garage door flying off the track in a wind storm, dangerous projectiles and the real possibility of roof damage doesn’t have to happen to you.
The best insurance you have against costly property damage is always preparing for the worst and expecting the best.
